Guillermo Martí Ceballos
Sant Pol de Mar, Spain
Artist Guillermo Martí Ceballos paints expressionist figures with Fauvist tendencies. “Although I paint both figures and landscapes, it is the figure, and especially the female face, that acquires special relevance in my work,” says Guillermo. He uses bold colors to heighten the emotional intensity of his pieces. Born into a creative family—his father was a painter and professor, his grandfather an antique dealer—Guillermo developed a deep love for art at an early age. Though he studied drawing, illustration, and graphic design in college, his artistic voice was shaped by persistence, experimentation, and self-teaching. He works from a cozy studio on the Catalan coast, surrounded by geraniums and filled with paintings, books, and music. Outside the studio, Guillermo enjoys walking in nature, watching films, reading, listening to music, spending time with friends, and finding quiet moments for reflection and meditation.
Artist Statement
Since childhood, I have been immersed in art. My father was a painter and my grandfather an antique dealer, fostering my love for art from a very young age.
My painting is figurative, with a Fauvist and Expressionist tendency. Starting from nature itself, my objective is to create a new pictorial interpretation. The motifs in my paintings are those that nature offers me—both landscapes and figures—though the figure, and especially the female face, acquire special relevance in my work. The strong colors I use are intended to convey my message more expressively in the piece.
Fauvism (Matisse, Derain), German Expressionism (Macke, Kirchner, etc.), and generally the first avant-garde of the 20th century are my greatest sources of inspiration (Picasso, Modigliani, Jawlensky, and more).
Although I have painted for many years with oil, the techniques I currently use are gouache, acrylic, and oil pastel. These techniques allow me greater speed and spontaneity in execution due to their quick drying. In my work on paper, I almost always use gouache in small formats that serve as projects for larger pieces.
I firmly believe that an artist must know their craft well. Drawing, composition, and knowledge of color should be the three basic pillars on which a good work of art is based. Once the craft is learned, the artist must develop and find their own personal style, transmitting emotions and feelings to the viewer with good taste, elegance, and expressiveness. My desire is to create beautiful and aesthetically harmonious work.
