Gbemi Adesanya
Brooklyn, New York
Artist Gbemi Adesanya creates abstract, minimalist wall sculptures using thermoformed plexiglass, exploring the space between the imagined and the physical through luminous, metal-like surfaces. "I approach materials as collaborators, allowing each piece to develop between intention and spontaneity," says Gbemi. Her work balances futuristic silhouettes with tactile presence, often featuring chrome-like, muted metallic, or holographic finishes that shift with light and perspective. Influenced by architectural environments and curated interiors, she considers how sculptural forms exist within contemporary spaces, inviting moments of stillness, curiosity, and visual intrigue. Working primarily from her New York City apartment studio, she creates multiple pieces at once in an intimate, evolving space filled with works in progress. Outside the studio, she enjoys exploring New York’s food scene, spending time with friends and family, and unwinding with K-dramas while learning Korean through storytelling.
Artist Statement
My sculptural practice explores the space between the imagined and the physical, pairing futuristic silhouettes with tactile, grounded surfaces. Working across materials such as thermoplastics, plaster, clay, and resin, I use a multipronged material approach to balance fragility and longevity, allowing form, texture, and spatial presence to guide emotional resonance.
At the core of my practice is creative curiosity, expressed through continuous experimentation with mixed media and the dynamic interplay of mediums. My process merges technical precision with intuition, allowing each piece to develop between intention and spontaneity, as I approach materials as collaborators, responsive to pressure, movement, and restraint. Light also plays a central role in my work, as I explore color and luminescence as tools for shaping perception. Through this exploration, my sculptures often feel suspended between motion and stillness.
Influenced by curated interiors and architectural environments, I am interested in how sculptural forms exist within contemporary settings. Whether encountered in a private residence, corporate space, or gallery context, my work aims to arrest the viewer, evoke a sense of wonder, and offer moments of both futurity and grounding.
