Artist Francesca Currie paints vibrant landscapes inspired by the dramatic scenery of Scotland and the rolling countryside of Herefordshire. "I realised then that whatever path I took, I would always see the world as a painter," says Francesca. The realization came while she was at university studying politics, when she became fascinated by an ant's shadow moving across the page and began thinking about how she would paint it. After studying painting at Norwich University College of the Arts, she developed a practice centered on capturing the atmosphere and emotion of a place rather than depicting it literally. Working in layers of oil and marble dust, she uses vibrant color, gestural marks, and shifting light to evoke movement, memory, and a sense of connection to the natural world. Her studio is an "organised chaos," a sanctuary where she can experiment, make mistakes, and lose herself in the process of painting. When not in the studio, Francesca enjoys walking, wild swimming, visiting castles along the Welsh border, and exploring the community around her home in rural Herefordshire.
Artist Statement
My abstract landscapes are inspired by the dramatic scenery of Scotland, the rolling countryside of Herefordshire, and other places that have left a lasting impression on me. Rather than depicting specific locations, I seek to capture the atmosphere, emotion, and memory of a place, translating fleeting moments of light, weather, and landscape into expressive compositions.
Working in layers of oil and marble dust, I combine intuitive mark-making with a strong understanding of color, tone, and composition developed through my classical training. My paintings often explore the contrast between movement and stillness, creating immersive spaces that invite contemplation and reflection.
Light is central to my practice. Inspired by the emotional power of artists such as Turner, I am drawn to moments when light breaks through cloud, mist, or darkness, symbolizing hope and the passage of time. Through vibrant color and gestural forms, I aim to create work that evokes a sense of calm and connection to the natural world.
For me, painting is a way of distilling the essence of a landscape rather than recording it. My work offers viewers a place to pause, reconnect with beauty, memory, and peace, and reflect in an ever-changing world.
