Elif Burduroglu
Spring, Texas
Artist Elif Burduroglu creates impressionist floral paintings that explore the space between the familiar and the imagined, using expressive brushwork, softened forms, and luminous layers of color. "I am not after a pristine look; I like personal touches and little happy imperfections," says Elif. Elif grew up in an artistic family in Turkey, with a mother who was a singer and composer, but was not encouraged to pursue art as a career. After moving to the United States in 2006, she finally found the courage to pursue her passion and began painting full time, studying at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and continuing to develop her practice independently. Elif works from her home studio in Spring, Texas, where a dedicated room has become a place of creative experimentation and what she affectionately calls "chaotic beauty." When she is not painting, Elif enjoys taking long walks, reading, cooking, and relaxing with her favorite shows.
Artist Statement
My paintings explore the space between what is seen and what is imagined. I am drawn to quiet moments of beauty, from an expressive face to flowers in bloom, and I often begin with something recognizable before allowing the image to become more open and suggestive.
I build my paintings through layers of color, applying different tones to the surface before developing the main subject. I like to leave traces of these underlying layers visible, allowing them to emerge through the finished painting. I work with expressive brushwork and layered paint, embracing personal marks and small imperfections rather than aiming for a pristine surface. These details give the painting a sense of character and allow the process of making it to remain visible.
As I work, I gradually loosen the image and leave some passages unresolved. I am interested in what can be communicated through color, atmosphere, expression, and gesture without describing every detail. My portraits are less about depicting a particular person than creating a sense of presence and mystery. In my paintings, I want the familiar to feel slightly dreamlike, leaving room for viewers to bring their own emotions, memories, and interpretations to the work.
Above all, I paint because I am deeply passionate about it. I hope my paintings draw viewers in through their beauty while offering a quiet sense of joy and positive emotion.
