Benjamin Xu
Oakland , California
Artist Benjamin Xu creates cityscapes that blend Asian and European architecture with serene depictions of nature. His work combines modernist sensibilities with a touch of whimsy and surrealism. Focusing on patterns and colors, he paints every line by hand and embraces irregularities and imperfections as honest expressions of his emotions. "My paintings generally convey peace, joy, and comfort," says Benjamin. He has loved visiting art exhibitions since his teenage years, studying various styles before developing his own. He works in a bright, medium-sized studio within a community, where he spends long hours painting, thinking, and discussing ideas with friends. When not creating art, Benjamin enjoys taking time off to generate new painting ideas, traveling, and attending exhibitions.
Artist Statement
I once came across a quote that deeply resonated with me: "All current artists are competing on the same track with both deceased and contemporary masters." That idea shaped my concept of the "Tall-Narrow Door," which reflects the challenge and pressure of finding one’s place as an artist.
Through expressive architectural paintings, I explore emotion beyond realism. I focus on color, pattern, atmosphere, and the shifting tones of smoky grays and soft light to create scenes that feel calm, reflective, and familiar. Bright and pastel colors help me build compositions that convey peace, comfort, and quiet joy, while architectural elements often reference both European and Asian influences.
I draw every line by hand, even when it appears imperfect or unsteady, because those marks carry genuine emotion. I do not want to rely on artificial precision or tools that distance me from the process. For me, painting is an honest way to communicate feelings and human connection.
Nature continues to inspire my work and encourages a freer, more intuitive approach to painting. I am drawn to subtle, unspoken moments that create a sense of stillness and reflection. I believe art should reflect its time while leaving behind an emotional record of human experience.
