Ava Doran
Bolton, United Kingdom
Artist Ava Doran creates abstract paintings inspired by psychology, philosophy, and quantum reality. With a PhD in human behavior, her scientific background strongly informs both the subjects she explores and her approaches in her craft. “My art is abstract and based on my understanding of the universe and universal mind,” says Ava. She has long used art as a form of expression and catharsis, beginning with poetry and short stories before turning to visual art. Although she works primarily from her home studio, she paints wherever inspiration strikes. When not making art, Ava works as a scientist and continues to explore reality through an analytical lens.
Artist Statement
I am a self-taught artist working with ink on canvas. I have a PhD in human behavior, and my training has influenced the topics that I paint and how I paint them. My work represents different aspects of the human psyche as well as universal themes. My art is abstract and based on my understanding of the universe and the universal mind. It comes from a place of timelessness and symbolism. The inspiration for the shapes, feelings, and figures represented is the psychology of the Self, the philosophy of consciousness, and quantum reality. Some of the topics conveyed by my art include: other-dimensional beings, human existence, meaning, the mind, the universe, dance and movement, depression and loss, godliness and symbols of religion, time and timelessness.
In my paintings, I incorporate patterns and repetition: Across works, you can find themes and symbols that repeat themselves in different ways, locations, renditions, and interpretations. Within works, I use a certain rhythmicity, such as the repetition of shapes and patterns, to explore abstract topics. My work can also be characterized as a fluctuating walk between chaos and order. Chaos brings all of the symbols in the foreground and pushes the viewer to make their own sense of the picture. Order presents a linear, clear, organized picture, but abstract at the same time, such that it draws on the same sense-making energy of the viewer. In many of my early works, I use black ink on canvas; lately, I have incorporated a colorful palette to confer new dimensions to my work.
What differentiates my art from other works is the unique use of the medium, as well as the drawing of a rich symbolism made possible through my scientifically and psychologically trained interpretation of the world. My paintings represent timeless topics that can draw and mesmerize the viewer and invite them to reflect on their own meaning. I would like my art to reach and inspire as many people as possible, to enable them to rediscover themselves and see the world around them through different eyes. As an artist, I continue to find new ways to discover myself, develop new techniques, and develop my own conceptual take on the things that I draw and that inspire me.
