Arden Rose
Saanichton, Canada
Artist Arden Rose's work explores the deep connection between humans and the environment, serving as visual meditations on the idea that we are reflections of nature, constantly echoing and influencing one another. She was raised in a nurturing, creative environment that fostered a deep reverence for the natural world. "In grade ten, my art teacher bought my batik, the first sign that art would always find me," says Arden. After earning an MBA and building a successful career in technology, she shifted her focus to her true passion, painting. Now based in Victoria, BC, she draws inspiration from the region’s dramatic coastlines and rich natural beauty. Her studio is a bright, lively space overlooking the sea, filled with her work, beloved pieces by other artists, and the tools of her practice. When not painting, she enjoys hiking, paddleboarding, reading, and spending time with family and friends.
Artist Statement
Working amidst the splendor of British Columbia, I cite light, color, and the abstract purity of nature as catalysts for my creativity. My work is sparked by simple moments of observation. In the forest or by the water, I feel transported to another plane, wholly immersed in the sensory realm. This state of captivation is spiritual for me, a personal dialogue with the earth, and it lies at the core of my artistic practice.
I begin with thousands of photographs—my phone alone holds more than 3,000 images of forests, ponds, and fleeting light—and spend hours curating a small pool of reference images. From there, the process unfolds in ways that are both meditative and meticulous. I work closely with the photographs at first to establish structure, then enter a flow state, responding viscerally to the light and movement I perceive through a combination of conscious perception and the less tangible mind’s eye.
Being in front of the canvas involves a physical exchange. I move back and forth, rocking and squinting, sometimes pressing so close that I laugh at myself. This playful approach allows the paintings to unfold in energetic bursts, filling them with movement, color, and light.
