Amber Flora Reid
Manhattan Beach, California
Bigger is better. For Amber Reid, the actions required to create large art are directly linked to the power of her pieces. She loves to create pieces that engulf the viewer. She draws inspiration from many feminists and performance artists of the 60s. To tell a story racked with emotion, Amber creates work with words and lines from her favorite books or songs.
Artist Statement
I paint people because looking into a person's eyes is fascinating. A face reveals, and conceals, various stories and emotions simultaneously. You form a bond with the figure in the painting, because you recognize a part of yourself in them. For this reason, I will never be able to steer my art away from people.
Though not literally self-portraits, I consider all my paintings to be forms of me. In each piece, I chose elements that connected to my life at that time. I have a relationship with each piece, but the viewer is always free to make his or her own story, ideas, and connection with it.
I am currently working on being more experimental; to add more emotionally charged abstraction and sensations of movement into my paintings. My new direction is to always seek out a "yin-yang" of realism, in harmony with abstraction and movement, united into one fulfilled piece. This quest is just beginning.
