Allen Wittert | Artist Profile Photo
Allen Wittert
London, United Kingdom
Artist Allen Wittert paints in an expressive style that blends abstraction and figuration, marked by bold linework and dynamic color. “I work generally with one of three motifs in mind—faces, architectural fantasies, or pure abstraction—sometimes closely from a specific sketch,” shares Allen. Born in South Africa, Allen’s artistic journey began with a passion for cartooning, teaching himself to draw by copying comic books and the modern art prints that filled his childhood home. This fusion of influences led to his distinctive, stylized approach. Over the years, his style has evolved as he traveled and lived in places as diverse as England, California, Texas, and Portugal. When not in the studio, Allen finds inspiration in everyday life—reading, sketching, biking, and walking—always keeping his creative instincts sharp.

Artist Statement

I value 'aliveness' in any art, so a perfect painterly finish has less importance than conveying movement and energy.

My subject matter has mostly settled on abstracts, figures, buildings, and boating scenes. And what I try to do is express and share the thrill I feel when light hits these subjects.

Wherever I live, I bring the bright light, the textures, and the eclecticism of South Africa to my work.

I like the painting surface to be unpredictable, rough, and scarred. I think this may be partly because I remember seeing my mother drawing funny cavemen in charcoal on a friend's garage walls for their prehistoric-themed party when I was five, and that pretty much made me want to be an artist.

Though I now feel the only way to make a painting is to plan a work using sketches, and sometimes rearranging things on the Mac before I start, I still usually go into the studio ready for anything to unfold.
