    Artist Statement

While I am capable of working in different genres, one of my favorites is an architectural motif. I like small towns’ secluded streets and old architecture. They inspire nostalgia about previous generations, events, and cultures. In these last few years, my paintings have become more and more decorative with bright, expressive color.

Some of my other favorite series are Aspens and Fall Alleys. Using bright colors, patterns, and textures, I create dramatic and unique pieces of textured painting made with a palette knife. The Rain and Umbrellas Series use rain as a theme to create a romantic and cozy feeling.

I would consider my style a modern, decorative expressionism. I create vibrant European and American landscapes, beach scenes, figurative works, and still lifes to attest to the beauty existing all around us.

My paintings are full of light, color, and the joy of living.

I was born in the city of Blagoveshchensk, in the Far East of Russia. This town is the capital of the Amur Region and has a unique location directly on the border with China.

I came from a family of artists who nurtured and encouraged my creative talent. I started his art education as a child in the Creative School for Gifted Kids followed by four years in college and six years in the Vladivostok University of Fine Art. My formal studies focused on the traditions of the Russian Realistic School of painting characterized by artists of the 19th century.

In August of 1977, my family immigrated to America. My wife is also an artist. There were a number of reasons for our move. We have tremendous desire explore another world--to try something completely new, fresh, and unpredictable. We've been in America almost 20 years and it has been a wonderful journey full of events, special people we've met, and beautiful places we visited. We devoted all those years to our Art.

Since moving to Colorado, I've been working as a freelance artist. I've been contracted to work with different galleries throughout the United States and exhibit my art work in selective art festivals, shows, and exhibitions. My paintings are displayed in both public and private collections throughout Russia, China, Japan, Brazil, Italy, Great Britain, Spain, and the United States.

I love this painting for its sense of place, its depiction of light distorted through rain, and especially its depiction of wet streets and walkways reflecting light and from both the street and interiors. The painting did not look right in the place where I first planned to hang it among a number of others, it was too large and too vivid, so I moved 2 framed photographs to that wall and hung this painting alone on a wall elevated above a table with a small lamp. At night the lamp illuminates this painting from below and brings out all of its special qualities. Very happy to own this painting.

Great piece in my family room, happy, bright, lively, and a terrific compliment to the city rain piece. Interestingly, the couple walking are also under umbrellas.
