Artist
Shellie Garber Portland, Oregon

Artist Shellie Garber develops evocative and engaging abstract paintings with a modern sensibility. While her work holds a playful innocence, her minimal line work and complementary color palettes reveal a deeper emotional connection to her subjects. Growing up with an artist mother, Shellie was encouraged at a very young age with art supplies, however, she wasn't particularly pulled to create. She eventually studied nursing and became an RN. Today, Shellie uses painting to bring balance to her life as a registered nurse. She begins each piece scribbling and drawing, knowing that most of her initial marks will be covered up by subsequent layers until her vision comes to life. "All of my work is created as I go," explains Shellie. "It is a very spontaneous, organic process." Shellie's works has been shown in galleries in Oregon, Washington and Pennsylvania.

    Artist Statement

I like to begin a piece with mark making. I play, scribble and draw, knowing that most, if not all of these initial marks will be covered up. I layer, adding and deleting marks and paint until I begin to see and feel some cohesion. At that point, I focus on the areas I like and play off those, building and designing with more purpose.

My lighthearted abstractions are an interplay of line, color and expressive mark making, often with collage elements adding dimension to the interesting surface texture. I paint intuitively and spontaneously, using built up and obscured layers to convey a sense of mystery, curiosity and imperfection.
