Artist
Nancy Rhodes Harper Huntsville, Alabama

Nancy Rhodes Harper has been making art since the age of five, and always knew it was her destiny to be an artist. Painting in oils and mixed media, Nancy’s work features contemporary, stylized women stylistically inspired by her mentor Milt Kobayashi. “I study with him every year for two weeks in Arizona. He is my biggest influence,” she says of the artist. Nancy aims to convey attitudes of sass, intrigue, and whimsy in her female subjects. Her favorite element of the painting is the figure’s face. “Expressions on the faces evolve and set the tone” of the work, according to Nancy. The personality of each painting can be articulated entirely through the glimmer in the subject’s eyes or her coy smile.

    Artist Statement

I am very passionate about my work. I paint in a very stylistic manner. My subject matter is mostly women and I have started working more abstractly. I paint with oils and mixed media. I wanted to be a fashion illustrator as a child because I love fashion and the gestural illustrations I remember from the 50's and 60's. I find inspiration everywhere. I study peoples faces and what they are doing in everyday life. My favorite artist is Milt Kobayashi. I study with him every year for two weeks in Arizona, and he has been my biggest influence. My intentions are to create representations of my vision of strong, independent, sassy, and whimsical women. From the time I was five years old I knew I was destined to become an artist, nothing has changed from that day, it is my life. I hope to continue to create and paint and live my passion as long as possible.
