Mark Hersch is an Illinois-based photographer and digital artist who creates unique cityscapes by melding historic and contemporary photographs. His work reflects his lifelong passion for photography, history, and architecture. He combines vintage and contemporary photographs of major cities in the United States. Mark begins his work by researching rare, historical photographs. Then, he travels to the location to shoot his version of the image taken from the exact same vantage point. Finally, he returns to his studio where he combines the two images on his computer, showing the past and present together. The inherent nostalgia of his work strives to elicit a powerful and personal response in every viewer.

About The Artist
Artist Statement
I merge rare, historic photographs with contemporary photographs I shoot from the exact same vantage point in the present day to create a single image that spans a century or more, revealing the past and the present together.
My hope is that these images elicit a powerful and personal emotional response in the viewer, drawing on the natural sentimentality and nostalgia people have for their childhood, their community and the common human desire to draw a personal connection from the past to the present.
