Katherine Gendreau West Warwick, Rhode Island

Katherine first became interested in photography when she moved to Rhode Island in 2006. She would bike along the ocean every day around sunset, when the light was golden and beautiful, feeling compelled to photograph what she saw. Since then, Katherine’s work has taken her to many places outside of Rhode Island. She tries to capture the sense of wonder that she feels when discovering a location for the first time. Utilizing long exposures ranging from one second to eight minutes, she attempts to record the accumulation of time in a single image. Dreamy and otherworldly, Katherine’s photographs unveil a secret world that is always there but the eye cannot see.

    Artist Statement

For me, the camera is just one tool that I use in approaching my photography. I primarily focus on coastal New England photographs, but I also like to experiment from time to time with other subject matter. I enjoy taking images that go beyond what can be seen with the naked eye, so I use different techniques or tools to create photos that reveal the "unseen" world around us. Many of my images are long exposures, ranging from less than 1 second to 8 minutes or even longer; these photos record the accumulation of time in a single image. I also enjoy creating abstract images with intentional camera movement, using a longer shutter speed and physically moving the camera during the exposure. This emphasizes the moving elements in the photograph, and creates a painterly quality to the image.
