Kat Silver Indianapolis, Indiana

Kat Silver’s surrealist paintings project something whimsical and enticing within their dream-like plots. They expose the inner conflicts in Kat’s life, which are revealed through the imagery of her dreams and the symbolism encountered in her daily life. These conflicts are universal, demonstrating an obsession with time, choice, and fate. The image of the rabbit has become an important symbol and signature in Kat’s work. For her, the rabbit represents power and taking control of one’s life. The sweet, confident groups of rabbits surround the lost, faceless characters in her paintings. We may not know where we are going, but we have guides along the way if we look for them.

    Artist Statement

My paintings are surrealistic and dream realm based. I believe in magic and the unseen, forces at work behind the scene to make our paths line up and fulfill whatever purpose or destiny we came here for. Much of my work is whimsical, maybe even a little sarcastic because I think most people are too caught up in the mundane day to day life stuff to notice that life is passing them by. In my work I am attempting to capture people's attention, to make them question their priorities, to take life a little less seriously, to not be so stressed and "sweating the small stuff". Also nature has always been a major source of inspiration for me. I believe we are all connected. All living beings and all creatures in the universe. I believe human beings have a lot we can learn from nature. If we watch & listen to the earth and all its creatures we can learn to more fully enjoy our life instead of being caught up in materialism, drama and stress.
About 4 years ago, rabbits became my power animal I started seeing and noticing them every where I went. Rabbits have a lot of different meanings and carry rich symbolism for many different cultures. To me in addition to their more common meanings of fertility, abundance and good fortune, they symbolized being fearless. They remind me to not allow my fears or anxiety to control me and keep me limited to safe areas. They beaconed me to push myself and push the limits of what I thought I was capable of.

Getting excited about the summer, warmer weather means being able to paint outside and also festival season. I really enjoy setting up my booth and meeting people. I love talking about my work and what it means to me. Its one of my favorite things about doing exhibits and shows, being able to meet people who are interested in art. So please feel free to message me and leave questions and comments about the work you see here. Do you have a favorite? What do you see or notice in the painting? Many of my pieces are narrative , they tell a story. I love hearing people's associations to the symbols and stories in the paintings.
