Artist Jason Astorquia’s abstract paintings reflect a blend of intuition and emotion, inviting the viewer into layered compositions that capture fleeting moments. “I trust my intuition to convey feelings—whether it’s the past dissolving into the present or a vivid moment frozen in time,” shares Jason. He began painting in 2007 after the birth of his daughter, drawing inspiration from his wife’s studio and immediately falling in love with painting. With a background in applied mathematics from Yale, Jason initially worked in technology and business but found himself drawn to creative pursuits. Working from his garage studio, he explores themes of nature, family, and sustainable living. As a family man, Jason enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter, hiking, writing, and exploring ideas that tune him into living more sustainably.
Artist Statement
Born and raised in Twin Falls, Idaho, I am the son of educators and am descended from bankers, politicians, ranchers, farmers, business people, common people, proud people, matriarchs, Scots, and Basques.
Originally trained at Yale University in Applied Mathematics, my professional life was primarily consumed with business operations, human resource management and benefits planning/administration, technology consulting, and software engineering, navigating startup companies and the Fortune 500. Somehow, that whole world has never fully fit and I have forever found myself pursuing creative endeavors "on the side" and seeking to tune in to my Truth.
I began painting in 2007 after the birth of my daughter. I was surprised, delighted, and taken by working with physical media. Painting has been color therapy, leading me to explore the intersection of the mind and the heart. It has been nothing short of a lifeline for me.
I experiment with abstract nature, figures, colors, concepts, and processes. My work is shaped by my journey, curiosity, and wonder. Thematically, I consistently explore the boundaries of reality. I am an artist for change.
I have had times of inactivity over the years. These periods, followed by reconnecting with painting, have made me aware that this act is a non-negotiable aspect of my being. So, I will follow the path and apprentice myself to what is required to enact the vision and inspiration, whatever may come.
All the pieces in my Impressions series are created using the impressions of painted pennies. Money, in intent and consequence, impresses us. Subtly, imperceptibly, it leaves a mark. Materially worthless, it has been awarded great value. It compels us to action, it compels us to wit. A model for equality that feeds on necessity and desire, that rewards innovation and toil, that rewards slight of psychological hand. A zero-sum game without a fixed supply. The manifestation of the minds of men. Allocation transcends generations and, more often than not, dictates a lot.
The impressions series – figurative, literal – explores the subconscious impact of an abstract concept. Money’s impression influences perception.
