Artist Ingo Ulrich captures the splendor of the rocky mountains, valleys and big rivers in the Black Forest of southern Germany. He gravitated towards art as a teenager, constantly sketching and drawing his surroundings. At the age of 16, he received his first brushes and paints, which quickly blossomed into a lifelong passion. Since then, he’s worked to hone his skills participating in painting workshops and with the guidance of several mentors. Ingo's current series captures the nature around his home in Freiburg, where he creates many of his paintings on location. "There's nothing better than the sound of nature when painting en plein air," says Ingo. "It's the seductive sounds of wind moving the grass, birdsongs and the whispers of nature's spirit." Ingo balances his creative pursuits with a full-time position in a hospital, where he is training to be a physician. In his free time, he and his wife enjoy spending as much time as possible in nature.

About The Artist
I use my own reference photos taken while hiking through the Black Forest in southern Germany. It’s the area where I live. It’s close to Switzerland and France. The french Vosges are near too and invite adventures. Not all of my paintings are done en plein air. Just the smaller ones.
I start with a wash of thinned oil paint, most of the time with a complementary color to create rhythm. Second, I apply a layer of thinned paint to define my value structure and the design/composition of the painting. Finally, it's time for color thick and thin, warm and cool, saturated and greyed.
