Dwight Smith Bradenton, Florida

Dwight Smith depicts commonplace objects with a sense of playfulness and humor. His watercolor still life paintings appear conventional in their soft colors and composed compositions, but upon further observation the juxtaposition of unrelated items make for delightfully surprising combinations and comparisons. This transformation of the everyday, and strong graphic style, lend the work a pop feel. However, pop art is generally cool and ironic. Instead, there is a familiar and comforting sense of kitsch and Americana in Dwight’s subjects. In a similar fashion to the work of American artist Wayne Thiebaud, Dwight paints food and sweets of the American appetite. Doughnuts, hotdogs, and lollipops are captured in all of their potent delight. He plays with scale and composition to bring out a sense of the absurd, but ultimately his goal is to make the viewer smile.

    Artist Statement

Inspired by the still life paintings of Wayne Thiebauld, and the collective works of Edward Hopper, this native of the Eastern Shore of Maryland, now residing on Florida's West Coast, has been an active watercolor artist since he earned his BFA degree in 1980 from the Columbus College of Art and Design in Columbus, Ohio. Over the last 25 years, Dwight has had paintings accepted in watercolor exhibits across America and has achieved Signature status in the Southern Watercolor Society.

Dwight finds inspiration for his paintings from his faith in God and his relationship with Jesus Christ, who allows him to see art in ordinary objects that make up our lives everyday. Dwight's paintings and illustrations are in a realist style and most have a narrative story to tell.

When he isn't painting watercolors or creating pen and ink illustrations, Dwight enjoys life with his wife, step son, and Bandit the Boxer.

I am looking at "A Stroll Along the Green." Any framing suggestions? Is there a margin that would allow a mat and frame? Thanks, LMC

Dear Dwight, I just received "Full Moon" and Between Seasons"! The paintings are absolutely gorgeous, the colors and reality of the images are incredible! My interest for your amazing work started with "When two or more agree II" and the last two pantings are just as beautiful. I am planning to display all together in my kitchen and I am sure it will be a fun and inspiring wall to look at while I am cooking! :) Thank you so much!!!!

I'm so glad you enjoy the watercolor and puffins that love to chit chat. I can't take full creative credit for it was my wife's idea. I hope you and family enjoy the Holiday Seasons.

My husband and I love the whimsy of the piece. We've seen all 3 of the world's species of puffins and would love to chat with any of them on a party line.

Thank you for your comment Ms. Wittner. I loved painting Daydreaming. I suppose I was inspired from our dog.
