Artist Brit J Oie grew up in a small rural town on the west coast of Norway where nature was her playground and creativity was a way of life. The men in her family were woodworkers and the women did knitting, sewing and weaving. Brit started her art career as a weaver in Norway. After marrying an American and moving to the United States, she went back to school for a degree in Fine Art. During her senior exhibition, Brit developed her mixed media technique using embossed papers and acrylic paint, which is a culmination of all the styles she has previously mastered. Today, she works in a light-filled studio in the River Arts District of Asheville, NC. Her work is held in numerous private collections in the U.S. and Norway as well as the University of North Carolina, Asheville. Outside of the studio, Brit enjoys hiking, gardening and soaking in outdoor hot springs, relaxing and taking in the river view.

About The Artist
Artist Statement
The textured surfaces are made by creating a collage of embossed paper and layering of acrylic paint, and I prefer to continue the paintings around the edge of the gallery-wrapped canvases, incorporating the sculptural shape of the canvas to move the image into space.
I work on the edge of abstraction and figuration, on the border of what is seen and what is felt. To stand in front of the vastness of the oceans and the massiveness of the mountains, knowing that these formidable forces of nature need my protection as much as they protect me, leaves me both humbled and inspired.
I began my art career in Norway as a weaver, but transitioned into painting after receiving a Bachelor of Fine Art in 1998 from the University of North Carolina. Western North Carolina is now my home, and since 2010 I have maintained a working studio in the River Arts District of Asheville.

I love Brit's aesthetic...the colors, the mood and the technique. This piece especially called to me and is perfect for the space I had in mind.It was framed in a floating frame which subtlety enhanced it's beauty.
