Artist
Brenda Buffett Nashville, Tennessee

Brenda Buffett is inspired by the dynamism in one of America’s fastest growing cities. Her bright abstract cityscapes capture a moment in time in the ever-changing urban landscape of Nashville. “The signature of this community is action and change… I hope my paintings capture a constant movement, like the energy of the turnaround in SoBro,” she explains. From her living room studio overlooking downtown Nashville, she may start with cathartic printed messages on the canvas and then use credit cards, a potato masher, eye patches, chopsticks, and feathers to build up layers in her signature style. Throughout her body of work, there are details alluding to the Nashville music scene, food, architecture and nature that invite a closer look. Brenda studied Interior Design at Belmont University, and her art is featured in the Mayor of Nashville's collection as well as a Bravo TV design show, solo shows and private collections.

    Artist Statement

Artwork often expresses the artist’s surroundings. I have lived in Nashville all of my life and have seen it evolve into the fastest growing city in the country. In my abstract paintings, I seek to express the feeling of this vibrant and many-layered community with densely textured, bold yet nuanced compositions. My work invites the viewer to look closer at the paintings to see the subtle patterns that hint of the light coming from windows in downtown office buildings or high rise apartments. There are always geometric shapes in my work, squares, circles, and stripes, created by the paint to explore the movements and sounds of this city, the flow of the river, the wonderful views from the bridges, images of nature, the sea, and the beach. I use paper to create many layers of heavy texture and sometimes hidden messages are underneath. I hope that people who see my paintings feel a little happier, more alive, and optimistic about the world.
