Annelise LaFlamme Long Island City, New York

Recent Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) graduate Annelise LaFlamme has a strong affinity for science. Her ink drawings and monotypes are inspired by biology, physics, and astronomy. She draws relationships between the hard sciences and human nature, and is therefore intrigued by fairytales and myths–the stories we tell ourselves to make sense of the world. Annelise describes her work as being at once horrific and humorous, familiar and unfamiliar. She uses fantastical visual metaphors to explain real behaviors. Fresh out of art school, Annelise is a young new talent living in New York.

    Artist Statement

Annelise LaFlamme was born and raised in NM. She graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in painting, and did an extended artist in residency at the Burren College of Art in Ireland the summer after. She now lives and works in Long Island City, New York.

She works in a variety of mediums including oil, acrylic, pen and ink, charcoal, and various printing techniques.

She often finds that creating an image is like telling a story from another's perspective - one with a strange and emotionally charged imagination filled with as much horror as humor, peace and balance.

Such is the perspective of science, which despite it's tendency to disagree with our sensibilities, does not require one to believe in it in order to exist. It is horror, humor, peace and balance at once.

This coming Saturday and Sunday, the LIC Arts Open is having its 2nd annual Fall Open Studios, and Salon Exhibit at the Plaxall Gallery. Over 300 works by over 100 artists will be featured, including two large oil paintings of mine. I wish I could upload the images here! If any readers happen to be in the city this weekend, I encourage you to stop by and see local artists' works - maybe eat their cookies, drink our wine.. and I also find the view of New York City and Long Island City's waterfront park so enjoyable.
