Artist
Yasmine Rafii Seattle, Washington

Yasmine Rafii is best known for her emotive city scenes saturated with rich colors. She takes her Canon camera with her everywhere, and captures compositions that explore rhythm and gesture. Her works start as raw photos and may be processed in Lightroom and Photoshop to achieve the emotions of the scene. Yasmine studied painting and textiles at the California College of Arts and Crafts, and she continued painting and showing in small group shows in the Bay Area, as she finished graduate studies in clinical psychology and art therapy. After a decade working in the business world, Yasmine returned to the arts by starting her own company self-publishing illustrated greeting cards. Around the same time, UNICEF commissioned three different series of small paintings for their notecard line, and she signed her first client as a graphic designer. When she is not shooting photos in her hometown of Seattle, Yasmine enjoys traveling, yoga, dance, films, cooking and gardening, and she speaks Farsi and French.

    Artist Statement

I am a Seattle-based graphic designer with a slight photography addiction. Having started out in life as an abstract painter, the urge to make images - any kind of images - tugs at me daily. The camera opened my eyes to new ways of "seeing" as I grasped to understand and anticipate the camera's 2-dimensional rendering of our 3-dimensional world. The photograph for me has become a way to capture dreams. The camera obliterates time while immortalizing it. The image within the frame is both abstract and realist. It is more than anything a psychological space - the shadow and light in our lives. Whether a straight forward photo or a manipulated one, my goal is to capture the moment when I merge with the scene - when my seeing becomes what is seen.

What I choose to shoot is a stream of consciousness. There are subjects of interest everywhere I look and my eye is often drawn to scenes where the basic elements of art coalesce into a pleasing gestalt. The final image comes from a deeper place. I love to experiment with different interpretations - to draw out the essence of a scene. There is the reality of the scene and then there is a supra-reality that it evokes. There are also associations to other mediums such as music, dance or poetry. What I am drawn to explore are the qualities of rhythm, space, color, gesture, shadow and light.

As I move through the world, my intention is to continuously explore and reinterpret these qualities in the scenes of everyday life that I come across.
