Tan Kadam's “Flora” photographs seem at first factual, clear and documenting. You think you see something familiar: plants. However, despite the meticulously captured small details their authenticity is questioned. They are not located, they have (with few exceptions) no bottom, no relation to the environment, no shadow. They are exempt from time and space reference. The hyper-real effect is achieved by the manufacturing process of the photos. A white and transparent fabric separates the plant from the background and it is photographed with different focal depths. In using different focus settings , studio lightning mixed with natural light, the pictures get an atmosphere of hyper-realism. By isolating plants from their natural context, Tan Kadam brings order to the natural chaos, he simplifies and creates abstraction.
