Artist
Sarah Clements Joplin, Missouri

Sarah Clement’s artistic process is best described by a Thomas Merton’s quote, “Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” She draws inspiration from history, mythology, literature, and religion. Sarah continually finds beauty in subtle and obscure places, and is happiest when she creates new worlds inspired by old worlds. Well-staged photography can transport you into a different universe. Sarah’s work feels like a real life version of living in a Pre-Raphaelite painting. Her portraits are magical, romantic, mysterious, and a little dangerous.

    Artist Statement

“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.”
    - Thomas Merton

This quote defines what happens when I look through my camera. Through photography, I have found who I am. I have found inspiration in countless areas; I have found beauty in subtle and obscure places. Finding myself has allowed me to completely lose myself.

I find myself happiest creating new worlds inspired by old worlds; history, mythology, literature, religion, these are the places that make my soul glow. I often use myself as the subject and the digital world of photography as my paintbrush, as a way to explore the dream worlds I create. Each day opens up new possibilities and new worlds to create, and each morning I awake, ready to take on the challenge.
