Rafal Kijas Bochnia, Poland

Rafal is a self-taught photographer working in Poland. Though he never had any teachers, he does find inspiration in avant-garde filmmakers David Lynch and Jim Jarmusch. There is an eerie, surrealist quality in Rafal’s artwork that speaks to these influences. He is not shy to admit that he dislikes anything contrived or “glittery” when it comes to photography. “I despise studio photographs, which I tend to associate with product photography or fashion photography,” he says. Rafal instead strives to shoot images that isolate specific human emotions, such as solitude and fear.

    Artist Statement

Solitude and fear: encountered every day, in every place since time immemorial, in contrast to the world of colourful commercials, healthy and eternally young people; solitude and fear are conditions without glitter, without fake smiles and without hope for future. Places and people whom I photograph are close to me; their natural environment is my own; together, we visit unused factories, abandoned houses or joints whose owners became customers and no longer have homes... Welcome to my world. Your Sunday best is not required.

Wonderful photo. I now own three of Mr. Kijas's photos, which are prominently displayed and a pleasure to view.

Hi Bruce, I heard from Rafal about the location of Zone. He said the photo was taken at the Bonarka Chemical Plant in Cracow. It operated between 1946 and 2002. It was demolished and a commercial center was built in its place. I hope this is helpful! Best, Samantha

Rafal, I just purchased this photo. Can you tell me where it was taken?

Dear Bruce Lederman The awareness that the photograph that I took at the other end of the world is hanging in your place and makes you happy gives me immense satisfaction. Thank you for your purchase and all the best,

Rafal, beautifully structured photo. I look forward to seeing (and buying) more of your creations.

Dear Bruce Valley, I am very pleased that my photo has invoked your memories and stirred your imagination - sometimes, I experience a similar thing - with scents; some vague scent can take me for a split second to the past and I do not always feel like coming back.

As a small child remember sitting on an uncle's lap outside on the porch watching a horrendous thunder storm. Never afraid after that. For the rest of my life just seemed to run toward the storm not away from it literally and figuratively. Your photo serves as a reminder of that characteristic. Excellent....love it.
