Rachel Dowd Springboro, Ohio

    Artist Statement

I grew up constantly pursuing artistic outlets and was always that kid on the floor drawing and coloring. As a child, I spent many years traveling with my family all over the United States and to several countries including Italy, Greece, Tunisia and Egypt. I’ve lived in a high-rise, on a farm, in the desert, in the suburbs, and in a camper. I also lived in the Middle East for two years. All of those unique experiences have greatly influenced how I see the world and my vision for my art.

I have always had a strong interest in art, but I’ve never taken any art classes. In fact, when I went to college I joined Army ROTC to become an army nurse. But I ended up getting married and having three beautiful little girls. It’s been difficult pursuing art while my children were very young, but now I have a little more time to really focus my attention on it.

I’ve tried nearly all mediums and have always enjoyed painting the most. Where I feel a little awkward with a pencil, a brush just feels like an extension of my fingers and my paintings seem like they paint themselves. In 2013, I started painting in oils and they truly spoke to me. I enjoy painting flowers and landscapes the most and I love capturing their movement and the emotions I feel when I see them. My hope is that my artwork brings joy into people’s lives.

My husband and I commissioned this beautiful painting from Rachel as a gift to his parents for helping us with our wedding. It's the house in which they've lived and raised their beautiful family for decades and a place that holds a really special part of our hearts. Rachel put thought and care into this painting and it shows. We sent her some photos of the house and she provided us with sketches of a few different angles to choose from before starting to paint. The finished work embodies the real home and showcases Rachel's talent so well; the lighting, shadows, colors, and tone are stunning and I love how the composition feels like the trees and greenery are embracing the home. My husband's parents were overwhelmed with emotion when we gave it to them - we may never be able to top this gift in our lives! We can't thank Rachel enough for this beautiful piece and had such a wonderful experience using UGallery. Thank you!!!

Hi Amy - Thanks for getting back to me. That is a wonderful choice. It is definitely my favorite out of her paintings - the colors are beautiful, and it feels like you can almost smell the freshly cut bouquet. It arrives completely ready to hang with cleanly finished white edges. I'm sure you would love it even more in person when you receive it. Please let me know if I can answer any other questions for you! Best, Samantha

Hi Amy, thank you for reaching out about Rachel's work! You can hang this work however you like. Rachel's work is on gallery wrapped stretched canvases with clean, finished edges. Her work can be hung as-is, or very easily framed in a simple floater frame. If you would like to wait to decide on framing, you can order the piece and hang it directly on your wall. If you feel it needs a frame, any frame shop could easily frame it for you. I hope this helps answer your question, and please let us know if you have any other questions at all! Best, Samantha at UGallery
