Patrick O'Boyle Charlotte, North Carolina

Patrick O'Boyle primarily paints in a studio, rarely using reference material other than his own thoughts and dreams. He always paints in a series of five - at the end of the fifth painting he revisits and reworks all of them until he feels they're complete. Using extra-long handles on his brushes, Patrick paints at a distance from the canvas so he can see the works evolve as a whole from the one color he starts with to the vibrant array at the end.

    Artist Statement

I was born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina. I have been painting for over twenty years. I am primarily a studio painter, using very little reference material for my work. My imagery derives from my thoughts and dreams about the world around me. I apply paint with large brushes; some attached to long handles, so that I can stand back and see my work as a whole. I begin each painting with one color. As I proceed to paint, the piece evolves into an array of colors, shapes and forms, taking on a life of its own. Passages of color may come and go as more paint is applied. I work instinctively, relying on the materials and process to guide me. It is my hope that the viewer can assemble his or her own explanation about the final imagery in my paintings.
