Artist Statement
Marti is compelled to paint abstractly and realistically. Loving both, her work has become a fusion of the two. She paints songbirds on abstracted backgrounds. There is something meditative when Marti paints. It’s like a dance between two worlds, heaven and earth that take her on a journey of the soul. Her intent as an artist is to take the viewer along on this voyage in hopes of sharing the essence of serenity and love.
Marti’s work is made of oil on canvas. She begins with the background taking an abstract approach of shapes and color painted in many layers. There is such freedom at this stage of the painting. She then incorporates the songbirds. This stage of the painting is more technical and brings forth a different challenge. When the piece has reached its destiny, the final step is to deliver its message of hope, love and serenity.
Marti is a self taught artist. As a child she could draw, color and look at art books for hours. Her home was filled with books on artists such as Rembrandt, Picasso, Renoir, Van Gogh, and Toulouse Lautrec, to name a few. Her father and sister are also artists. As she got older, she explored different mediums such as pastels, colored pencils, mixed media and sculpture. Now she paints in oil.
