Bill Kreitlow is a longtime lover of watercolor. He began experimenting with the medium in high school, and has continued to explore its properties and test its limits. Bill uses translucent layers of paint to create the effects of light, water, and atmosphere. His images capture serene natural vistas at seemingly magical moments. Bill finds inspiration in glassy water and wispy clouds, and uses his own photographs taken on day trips and vacations as source material. Though the images are a great starting point, the final paintings are always subject to Bill’s own interpretive lens.

About The Artist
I use my own photographs as subject material. Initially, I tried to let the camera do the work and establish the perfect painting composition and mood. Now the camera serves primarily as a tool to collect reference material, much of which is shot while traveling the highways and rural back roads.
As you view my watercolors, you become aware of four elements:
First, is the depth I achieve as you are drawn deeper into the painting, whether traveling along a country road, crossing a field or wetland, or standing on a ridge viewing the receding lines of mountain ranges.
Second, is the achievement of atmosphere, whether it is a humid sultry day, or the cold of a wintry afternoon, or the majestic clouds of an approaching storm touching the mountain tops.
Thirdly, is the awareness of the use of color which is clean and pure. Remove the matting and you will see how the many thin washes from a limited palette are layered one on top of another to provide the subtle color changes.
And fourthly, is the use of texture to define the surfaces, from a hand hewn fence post, to the rough surfaces of a rock wall, to the glassy smoothness of the calm water of marshy inlets.
Even though there is compositional and color planning prior to painting, my use of color is allowed to evolve as the work progresses.
In addition to my core love of landscape, I have done some still life paintings.
