Lanie Widmar lives and paints in Altea, Spain. This painting is part of her series of European cafe scenes. "The leisurely pastime of talking with friends and enjoying a cafe or aperitif is a dominant part of the culture," says Lanie. "This painting was inspired by a typical cafe in Sevilla. The mood of the day was overcast with brief glimpses of sunshine. I used strong, dark watercolors for the shadows to contrast with the lighter colors of the limestone facades."
Lanie Widmar paints energetic watercolors of European landscapes and cityscapes. Her work hovers on the edge of abstraction and uses just enough pictorial imagery to suggest the scene. She strives to portray the essence of each location and allows the viewer to participate with his or her imagination. Lanie discovers her subject matter on her travels, where she photographs, sketches and paints en plein air.
