The light shining on these translucent, pale green fennel bulbs alongside the strong orange of the carrots was so wonderful to notice. I had to paint them all together. I saw this one morning at a local Saturday market in Davis, California. I am always looking for fascinating ways that light reflects off of objects, bold color combinations and interesting shapes to bring my paintings to life.

I like to use pure primary and secondary watercolors so I have control over my colors. This also keeps then clean and cheerful. I use a method of layering to slowly develop the colors and the lights and darks. This piece is on heavyweight paper and will need a frame for display.

Getting to Know Nancy

Nancy Muren likes to slow down and appreciate the unique qualities in overlooked items. She feels that in our rapid lifestyle, and with all our new gadgets, “we might miss something very interesting and beautiful.” That’s what she hopes to portray in her paintings. She also finds inspiration in her four grown children. When she’s not painting, she enjoys walking, swimming, riding her bike and hunting for treasures at thrift stores and estate sales. She currently lives in California. Fun fact: on her dad’s side, her ancestors were on the first boat of settlers headed to the shores of Quebec, Canada.
