I enjoy painting many subjects but I particularly like urban scenes. As with all subjects, I'm looking for interesting shapes within the overall composition but I also look for atmosphere. City scenes always seem to have both interesting shapes and atmosphere in abundance. In this painting, I used a limited cool color palette to create uniformity and a feeling of closeness and intimacy with the buildings and shadows on the street. This piece is on heavyweight paper and will need a frame for display.

Getting to Know Judy

For Judy Mudd, creating a work of art means much more than simply reproducing something she sees. “It is more than painting a subject, it is expressing a feeling,” she explains. Judy develops her paintings with thorough reconnaissance work. She goes out on photo shoots in a variety of atmospheric conditions, sketches outdoors, takes notes, and completes color and value studies. From there, back in the studio, she lets the paintbrush guide her. Outside of painting, Judy also runs a real estate business with her husband. In many ways, her work in real estate can be seen via the architectural influences in her watercolors.
