Artwork
Lanie Widmar lives and paints in Altea, Spain. This artwork was inspired by a visit to Madrid. She wanted to capture the hot afternoon in Plaza Santa Ana. After her trip, she painted this piece in her studio from reference photos. "I used a limited palette of warm pure pigments, mixing them on the paper. I also used the transparent non-staining pigments in the background to emphasize the old, crumbled paint of the 17th century building facade," Lanie explains.

Lanie Widmar paints energetic watercolors of European landscapes and cityscapes. Her work hovers on the edge of abstraction and uses just enough pictorial imagery to suggest the scene. She strives to portray the essence of each location and allows the viewer to participate with his or her imagination. Lanie discovers her subject matter on her travels, where she photographs, sketches and paints en plein air.
