A monotype depicting trees and figures in a bizarre and mysterious landscape. One of my finest monotypes technically with intricate sharp detail and beautiful greys. It is pressed on Mulberry, a thin very high quality 45 gsm printmaking paper made from kozo. The actual image size is approximately 19x19 inches

Getting to Know Simon Shawn

Abstract yet allegorical, Simon’s monotype prints cannot be digested in a single glance. Forms and figures emerge from great swirling masses, encouraging greater exploration of his detailed images. The compositions meld mechanical and organic shapes to address complex relationships between the body, spiritual creation, and technology. Each work is rich in value, ranging from deep black to pure white. “I was an unhappy oil painter for eight years before stumbling across printmaking,” says Simon. Drawing on his painting experience, monotyping gave Simon a more tactile and physical way of working. Today, he finds inspiration in Greek mythology, medieval art, biblical stories, and his overgrown backyard in British Columbia.
