A dramatic black and white photograph of midtown Manhattan. Long shadows engulf Third Avenue as a sliver of sunlight illuminates pedestrians and vehicles. "So much about New York is dynamic, and that is true even of the intense shadows that fall upon its streets and avenues," says photographer Adam Garelick. "As a photographer, the interplay between sunlight and the city's tall buildings is ever-changing and worthy of constant attention." This image was made on film, hand developed by Adam, and digitally scanned at maximum resolution.

Adam Garelick

West Hartford, Connecticut

Adam Garelick enjoys taking photographs that challenge the viewers’ perceptions of certain subjects. His photographs of New York try to capture a much quieter city than the fast-paced metropolis most people picture. To capture his unique snapshots, he primarily shoots late at night and works in black-and-white photography. The photography of artists like Stephen Shore and Robert Adams continue to influence his work. When he’s not photographing, he tries to be outdoors as much as possible; he enjoys golfing, running and hiking. Even during these activities, he looks for new subjects to photograph. He currently lives in Connecticut.
