I got lost driving around the backroads near the southern Rhode Island coast, and came across this rocky beach, a popular fishing spot. An early winter storm was clearing and the sky was ominous in one direction, blue in the other, prime conditions for an epic sunset. I set up my tripod and tried to capture the motion of the water rolling around the rocks after a wave came in. The sky erupted into a brilliant display that lasted quite a while. I stood alone on the beach, feeling fortunate to have witnessed this amazing scene.

Katherine first became interested in photography when she moved to Rhode Island in 2006. She would bike along the ocean every day around sunset, when the light was golden and beautiful, feeling compelled to photograph what she saw. Since then, Katherine’s work has taken her to many places outside of Rhode Island. She tries to capture the sense of wonder that she feels when discovering a location for the first time. Utilizing long exposures ranging from one second to eight minutes, she attempts to record the accumulation of time in a single image. Dreamy and otherworldly, Katherine’s photographs unveil a secret world that is always there but the eye cannot see.

Love Katherine's photos, especially the sunsets. Got the Lone Cypress Sunset for our living room and Matunuck Sunset for our bed room. Look great on canvas.- G Ernst
