"This image was taken from the top of the Empire State Building on a frigid winter night," says photographer Adam Garelick. "In the foreground is the east side of Manhattan. The East River winds south under the Williamsburg Bridge. The borough of Brooklyn is visible toward the top of the frame." This long exposure was captured with a Hasselblad camera on medium format film and scanned digitally at the highest resolution.

Adam Garelick

Adam Garelick enjoys taking photographs that challenge the viewers’ perceptions of certain subjects. His photographs of New York try to capture a much quieter city than the fast-paced metropolis most people picture. To capture his unique snapshots, he primarily shoots late at night and works in black-and-white photography. The photography of artists like Stephen Shore and Robert Adams continue to influence his work. When he’s not photographing, he tries to be outdoors as much as possible; he enjoys golfing, running and hiking. Even during these activities, he looks for new subjects to photograph. He currently lives in Connecticut.
