Philip and his girlfriend Addysen were taking photographs in her vintage 1957 Spartan trailer. Philip hazed it up and put a single light outside behind her beaming in the 35 foot trailer. Philip uses lots of in-camera tricks to accomplish different looks. In this case, he put a piece of glass in front of the bottom half of the lens to blur and stretch the image causing an ethereal effect.
Philip Roy is an Emmy-nominated filmmaker turned photographer. He explains the transition, "after lighting and shooting over 30 feature films, I started to find myself more interested in photography. It's more romantic and not so rushed like film. I wanted more time to create and light." Using stage lights from his filmmaking days, Philip lights each photograph and captures the scene in one frame. In other words, he does not alter or retouch the images in the studio - it is all captured in one shot on-site. In a time of digital manipulation, this is a purist approach to the art of photography. Philip stays awake late at night imagining new scenes, and then does the discovery and planning on site. He uses the materials and settings near him, often shooting himself or his girlfriend in their trailer and nearby properties. Based in Austin, Texas, Philip also enjoys running the lake, developing new show ideas and eating sushi.
