Aged Prayer
The age shows on skin
lifetime of aloof neglect
wrinkles beckon death.

"Aged Prayer reveals issues of nature, global stewardship and personal introspection," says Erik. "The distinct grain of the image comes from the analog film it was created with, while also reflecting the rough nature of our surroundings."

Erik Cocks

With a resume that includes working with photography giants Herb Ritts and Francesco Scavullo, Erik successfully applies the skills acquired in his commercial photography career to his fine art practice. Erik’s photographs have a compelling air of mystery and surreality. Many of the images were originally shot on analog film, resulting in a grainy and authentic aesthetic. On occasion, the viewer may not initially realize they are looking at a photograph. Erik explains, “My pieces always begin with a concept that comes from an emotion I’m seeking to convey or a story I’m trying to tell.” He then selects a location and subject to support his concept, often using metaphor as a device to present his ideas. Skillfully manipulating the medium of photography, Erik continually produces deliberate, striking, and thought-provoking compositions.

New work is coming to the gallery! I am completing 3 series that all deal with the human condition and the life we all work through. These new fine art pieces illustrate the precarious balance between individuality and making one's way through the world. As I complete each series, I will be posting the artist statements here for everyone to read. I'm very excited about the coming months and am looking forward to the gallery featuring some of the pieces!

Three of my fine art photography pieces were featured in a gallery exhibit in Clearwater Florida for its Jazz Fest celebration. Although the event was mid-week, there was a steady stream of traffic to kick off the Jazz Fest week. I'm always excited to see what the other artists are doing as they interpret the theme and was honored to be among them and have my work chosen in the juried process. This was a themed show that featured fine art photography on one street in the downtown Clearwater area. Artists had retail and commercial establishments available to shoot in, and in my case, the pizza parlor I wanted to create artwork in opened first thing in the morning so I could photograph nudes. The vision I had was that a person would be in a restaurant nude, exposed to the world yet positively comfortable and secure in that she needed nobody to make her feel whole. The artistic images I had in mind would take a vintage feel and fall within the expressive genre as they were designed mainly to convey emotional impact and promote a feeling of empowerment. The model I worked with was incredible and pulled off the images with poise, grace and power. I'm looking forward to work with her again on a fine art photography project I have coming up, so stay tuned.
