A visit to San Francisco's Mission District to enjoy its fantastic urban murals inspired this piece. In all of the murals, I loved the diffuse edges and the way that the focal point emerged from chaos. When I decided to tackle this subject from Little Italy in Lower Manhattan, I opted to treat this composition as a "vignette" showing detail that emerges from almost random color on the periphery. I start works like this with a random wash of colors on the board surface, and then I execute the drawing over top of those colors. I've used these color washes to successful effect in my past landscapes, but I haven't rolled with them as much in my cityscapes. I like the results, so you'll see more of this approach in my future works.

This piece is on illustration board and will need a frame for display.
