Abigail Drapkin
San Francisco, California

Abigail Drapkin is an oil painter based in San Francisco. Originally from Maine, she graduated with high honors in Studio Art and French from Brandeis University in Boston and spent her junior year at the Sorbonne and Pont-Aven School of Contemporary Art in France. Abigail’s recent works on canvas and wood explore narrative portraiture within modern local landscapes. For her current portrait series, she uses black and white photographs from the early 20th century as reference material. In these works, the natural texture and warm tones of the exposed wood grain influence the mood and composition of the portraits.

I opened this beautiful gem of a painting and was immediately happy I made the decision to order Abigail's painting! The expression and feeling she caught in the subjects in this painting are delightful - her brushwork is beautiful. Thank you, Abigail Drapkin! Comments About This Piece

"The Colonel" was painted from a tiny black and white vintage photograph. It was done in oil on warm brown woodgrain with added gold leaf to highlight the man's stately character. This regal porch setting offers a nostalgic glimpse of a bygone era, but it is up to the viewer to complete the story.

This piece is on a cradled wood panel with finished edges. It comes varnished and ready to hang.

Oil painting

Oil paint uses natural oils, such as linseed, poppy and walnut oil to bind the pigments. Oils are slow to dry, which allows the artist to rework the painting to achieve the desired effect. Also, they blend easily, which helps to achieve certain colors. With the rise of naturalism in 15th century Early Netherlandish painting, oil paints became preferred to quick drying tempera paint. Artists wanted a medium that would allow them to achieve detailed and precise effects in their paintings. Consider all of the detail in the masterpieces of Jan van Eyck and Hieronymus Bosch!

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
