"Morning Calm" is part of an ongoing series inspired by Elkhorn Slough, an estuary reserve on the California coast. I was inspired by a peaceful early morning walk before the sun was in full force overhead. I started the painting with a thin wash of magenta and slowly built up the surface by glazing layers of paint alternating between different shades of blue, green and yellow until I reached the desired inner glow. The sides of the gallery wrapped canvas are finished in ultramarine blue and the piece has a final layer of varnish to protect the surface. It comes ready to hang.

Getting to Know Victoria

Victoria Veedell loves capturing the essence of nature by creating landscapes that are not necessarily seen, but felt. She enjoys traveling and has completed residencies everywhere from India to Japan. When she’s not painting, she enjoys spending time with her family and exploring. She finds inspiration in everything she sees, such as the moody and misty qualities of fog. Victoria currently lives in California. Fun fact: she is from Texas but no one would ever guess that unless they tried her spicy Lasagna — it includes jalapeños!
