Shilo Ratner
Woodbridge, Connecticut

Shilo Ratner delves beyond the anatomical to study the psychological depth of a person. By focusing on the emotional state of her subjects, Shilo intensifies a mere mannerism into a pose replete with human sensitivity. Her playful use of light and shadow and her economy of color articulates a tension in the painting.

Another year has begun. Really excited for how this year is unfolding art wise. I'm in the process of working on several small oil paintings for a portfolio review I have in April. Keeping my fingers crossed that I get a majority of my work done by the end of February.

Artist Update: I just posted "The Embrace" on the site.

This is my first post ever on the Ugallery website. My intention for the next two weeks will be to spend a little less time in the studio and some more time sketching as well as meditating. This fall felt like a mad dash to get the public art project completed and to finish some artworks for clients. Now that I have some time to regroup I am going to take a few days to just be.

Comments About This Piece

Through my work, I try to question and broaden our established ways of observing and interacting in order to connect with our true selves outside of assumed social constructs. This painting is on a cradled wood panel with finished edges. It comes ready to hang.

Oil painting

Oil paint uses natural oils, such as linseed, poppy and walnut oil to bind the pigments. Oils are slow to dry, which allows the artist to rework the painting to achieve the desired effect. Also, they blend easily, which helps to achieve certain colors. With the rise of naturalism in 15th century Early Netherlandish painting, oil paints became preferred to quick drying tempera paint. Artists wanted a medium that would allow them to achieve detailed and precise effects in their paintings. Consider all of the detail in the masterpieces of Jan van Eyck and Hieronymus Bosch!

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
