James Hartman
Burlingame, California

When James Hartman was in art school, he became fascinated with the Society of Six, a group of artists who painted en plein air (outdoors) and exhibited together in the San Francisco Bay Area during the early 20th Century. James's paintings of the Northern California landscape pay tribute to some of the great Bay Area artists of the past. His expressive scenes feel alive through his vibrant use of color and his painterly brushwork. Hartman’s paintings have an immediate visual impact from a distance, yet up close, dissolve into a series of confident marks and strokes. There is a simultaneous complexity and steadiness in his flattened, color-blocked planes. Knowledge and observation are essential elements of James’s working practice. To this end, he spends a large proportion of his time painting on location. His body of work captures the fresh and sunlit essence of the coastal California hills.

Dear Susan Bradley, What a nice connection we have made. I am happy that after acquiring my work online you have been satisfied with seeing it in real life enough to become a return buyer! Having people like you as customers makes me want to share more of my work online, and make more connections that would have otherwise not been possible. I can't thank you enough. Cheers, James Hartman

I own several of James Hartman's paintings and can't say enough about how much I enjoy seeing them every day in my home. James captures each subject with true aristry and expressiveness and his connection to the medium is so authentic and the result so beautiful. The online versions really don't do justice to the in person experience. Work like this makes the world a bettere place. I look forward to adding more of James Hartman's paintings to my collection.

Dear E. De Groot, It is an honor to hear such praise from the daughter of an accomplished artist. I am happy that you appreciate the medium of encaustics. I enjoy painting with oils and fusing it into my beeswax prepared panels! I too like the way the colors flow when made molten! Different lighting conditions make a huge difference so I can appreciate your shifting paintings around to view them in differing situations. Thank you for your interest in my work and for being a return buyer! I enjoy selling my work on Ugallery!

E De Groot purchased this artwork. 5/14/2017 | 8:16 AM

not only did i purchase "pacheco trees", but i also am now the happy owner of "page mill rd". before viewing these 2 paintings, i had never before been exposed to the "encaustic" technique of painting. i'm intrigued with the flow and movement of the images due to this technique. but i also am drawn the both images--landscapes with trees--and james' choice of rich, vibrant colors. i've been enjoying my paintings so much that i've changed where they hang in my house so i can enjoy them as much as possible. even have a pic of them in my phone!!haven't done this with any of my other "favorites" not to mention having grown up with a father who has his masters in painting and sculpting and has done so professionally all his life(so i have a number of his paintings at home to admire too). keep up the great work, james!

I had looked at this on Tuesday and went to purchase it last night to find that it has been sold. So very disappointed. Loved this piece of work. When I saw it, the colors made me happy. Beautiful, bright, sunny colors. I hope that you will be inspired to do something similar in the future. I will be watching for future pieces. Cheers, Greta Corazza

Comments About This Piece

Flowers growing in prismatic gradations create a field of light. Brushes and palette knives were used to apply the thick oil textures.

This piece is on a gallery wrapped canvas with finished black edges. It comes ready to hang.

Oil painting

Oil paint uses natural oils, such as linseed, poppy and walnut oil to bind the pigments. Oils are slow to dry, which allows the artist to rework the painting to achieve the desired effect. Also, they blend easily, which helps to achieve certain colors. With the rise of naturalism in 15th century Early Netherlandish painting, oil paints became preferred to quick drying tempera paint. Artists wanted a medium that would allow them to achieve detailed and precise effects in their paintings. Consider all of the detail in the masterpieces of Jan van Eyck and Hieronymus Bosch!

Stretched canvas

Canvas is a heavy-duty fabric used as a painting surface. When a canvas artwork is labeled stretched, it means the canvas has been wrapped around a wooden frame (the ''stretcher''). Stretched canvases typically do not require framing.

A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other. This piece is available exclusively at UGallery.
