Suzanne began this oil painting in the fall while the oaks and prairie grasses near her studio were changing color. She then finished the work in her studio over the winter. "The oak tree with yellowing leaves is the main theme," she explains, "and I used the strong winds blowing through the grasses to complete the scene." Suzanne says a refrain from an Irish song was her inspiration - "While soft the wind blew down the glen and shook the golden barley."
When the land changes, Suzanne Massion's paintings will remind you of the way it once was. She drives the back roads through the tall grass prairies and farmland of her native Illinois, stopping to paint en plein air when the moment strikes. She feels like she's in a race to save a disappearing treasure as buildings burn or open space is paved over. Suzanne donates a portion of her sales to fund local land conservation efforts.
