Recently, Sumner has been exploring the use of text in her paintings, adding poetry to accompany the message of the artwork. "This painting focuses on the things in life that hold us back, the tethers - whether tied by ourselves, others or forces beyond our control - that we must loosen or sever in order to grow and change," says Sumner. In this painting, she included the following original poem:The tether
It is but oh so clever
It hides its knots
Within my wings
Then lets me believe
That I can fly free
Sumner Crenshaw infuses her work with movement, lines and varying degrees of color. She currently lives in Maryland and finds inspiration in the work of Salvador Dali. Her goal is to keep exploring the minimalist, narrative surrealism she's been moving toward.
