Originally a simple figurative piece, where the focus was exploring the electric contrast between the lemon yellow shapes and the black background, this piece soon evolved. As I worked, the figure's hunched posture and pained expression began to speak to me. She looks nervous to be in the bright spotlight, but she also doesn't retreat. Instead, she bravely, gingerly allows herself to be illuminated; a symbol of introversion, and the contrasting desires to hide and to be seen.
Sumner Crenshaw infuses her work with movement, lines and varying degrees of color. She currently lives in Maryland and finds inspiration in the work of Salvador Dali. Her goal is to keep exploring the minimalist, narrative surrealism she's been moving toward.
