James Hartman
Burlingame, California
When James Hartman was in art school, he became fascinated with the Society of Six, a group of artists who painted en plein air (outdoors) and exhibited together in the San Francisco Bay Area during the early 20th Century. James's paintings of the Northern California landscape pay tribute to some of the great Bay Area artists of the past. His expressive scenes feel alive through his vibrant use of color and his painterly brushwork. James’s paintings have an immediate visual impact from a distance, yet up close, dissolve into a series of confident marks and strokes. There is a simultaneous complexity and steadiness in his flattened, color-blocked planes. Knowledge and observation are essential elements of James’s working practice. To this end, he spends a large proportion of his time painting on location. His body of work captures the fresh and sunlit essence of the coastal California hills.

We are delighted with your painting, Stopping By a Half Moon Bay Farm. It looks beautiful in our new home! My husband and I both lived in Northern California, prior to our recent move to North Carolina. Viewing your artwork brings back wonderful memories, especially for my husband, who lived in the Bay area and remembers Half Moon Bay well. In gratitude, Deborah and Phil Kates
- D Schwartz-KatesFlowers in a Blue Vase totally popped a dark area in our family room. This is the second James Hartman painting we have bought and no doubt we will find more of his art to grace our homes.
- C ColemanI own several of James Hartman's paintings and can't say enough about how much I enjoy seeing them every day in my home. James captures each subject with true aristry and expressiveness and his connection to the medium is so authentic and the result so beautiful. The online versions really don't do justice to the in person experience. Work like this makes the world a bettere place. I look forward to adding more of James Hartman's paintings to my collection.
- S BradleyWe have just received our beautiful painting. My husband and I are both so pleased with that it looks absolutely perfect in our home. The medium is really unusual and the colors are just gorgeous. Thank you so much for this beautiful piece.

My family has a nice collection of Mr. Hartman's work from around 2005; we love his work! The way they change depth and contour in different light throughout the day is remarkable. I love letting my eyes blur a bit so the colors, patterns and brush strokes take on different aspects. They will always be captivating and give new experiences!
Hi C. Coleman, I am so happy to hear that Flowers in a Blue vase is working well in your home. That is great news that you are a return buyer! Thank you for your appreciation of my work!

Beautiful piece of art that a picture on the computer can't do justice. Thanks James my wife and I love it.
Dear Susan Bradley, What a nice connection we have made. I am happy that after acquiring my work online you have been satisfied with seeing it in real life enough to become a return buyer! Having people like you as customers makes me want to share more of my work online, and make more connections that would have otherwise not been possible. I can't thank you enough. Wow! I am really impressed with Ugallery"s new partnership with Crate and Barrel. I have had excellent results and have received feedback worldwide. Cheers to Ugallery for putting this remarkable arrangement together.
Dear E. De Groot, It is an honor to hear such praise from the daughter of an accomplished artist. I am happy that you appreciate the medium of encaustics. I enjoy painting with oils and fusing it into my beeswax prepared panels! I too like the way the colors flow when made molten! Different lighting conditions make a huge difference so I can appreciate your shifting paintings around to view them in differing situations. Thank you for your interest in my work and for being a return buyer! I enjoy selling my work on Ugallery!
not only did i purchase "pacheco trees", but i also am now the happy owner of "page mill rd". before viewing these 2 paintings, i had never before been exposed to the "encaustic" technique of painting. i'm intrigued with the flow and movement of the images due to this technique. but i also am drawn the both images--landscapes with trees--and james' choice of rich, vibrant colors. i've been enjoying my paintings so much that i've changed where they hang in my house so i can enjoy them as much as possible. even have a pic of them in my phone!!haven't done this with any of my other "favorites" not to mention having grown up with a father who has his masters in painting and sculpting and has done so professionally all his life(so i have a number of his paintings at home to admire too). keep up the great work, james!
Hello Mary Ann, I am so glad you are pleased with your new artwork. Thank you for your consideration! Regards, James

I had looked at this on Tuesday and went to purchase it last night to find that it has been sold. So very disappointed. Loved this piece of work. When I saw it, the colors made me happy. Beautiful, bright, sunny colors. I hope that you will be inspired to do something similar in the future. I will be watching for future pieces. Cheers, Greta Corazza
