A figure seated in contemplation fragments into swathes of light blue and lemon yellow, while lines and shapes swoop around her, almost as if her thoughts float around her body. This piece was all about moving away from the curving shapes usually found in my work and finding contrast: the feminine curves versus the angular shapes and lines; the soft, pastel colors versus the blocks of pure black.

Getting to Know Sumner

Sumner Crenshaw infuses her work with movement, lines and varying degrees of color. She currently lives in Maryland and finds inspiration in the work of Salvador Dalí. Her goal is to keep exploring the minimalist, narrative surrealism she’s been moving toward. Fun fact: The Ballet Russes inspired her to start a series that explores dance through painting.
