The moment we as consumers realize we “have to have” something is the intention with this work. Its the moment we are defeated by impulse and envy of a material possession. This painting is not intended to scream that moment but poke at the moment instead. The trendy figure is just one that is not a pedestrian symbol, all other figures are objectified. The automobile is the one extreme object designed to grab our consumer impulse.

Getting to Know Dustin

You might call Dustin Joyce an iconoclast. His project, The Modern Americana, is a playfully satirical depiction of current American lifestyle. More inquiry than proclamation, Dustin enhances and dramatizes our mass culture, making it appear as another advertising image. His paintings are neither inherently positive nor negative, instead he intends to present an exaggerated view of our American culture. Dustin strives to design work that is both beautiful and offensive. Fun fact: Dustin works as an Artist Assistant to Jeff Koons.
